My back was toasty, warm in a way it hadn’t been in months. Not since Salem stopped sleeping with me. Not since everything went to shit between us.

My heart lurched into my throat when Salem groaned from behind me and deeply inhaled, his arms tightening around me. At the same time, dread slid through my veins. Because what happened if Salem pulled away from me again? I wouldn’t be able to survive it. I knew I wouldn’t. It would officially kill me.

I wiggled out of his hold before going to the bathroom, shutting the door behind me so I could get my shit together without him barging in and forcing his presence on me. I didn’t know what was happening. Honestly, I was blindsided by Salem suddenly trying to fix everything between us. I didn’t know what to do now that the old Salem seemed to be making a reappearance.

I hated the hope that bubbled up in my chest. Because if Salem killed that hope, there would be nothing left of me.

Why did I have to need him so fucking much?

I turned the water on and began to brush my teeth. After washing my face, taking a leak, and pulling my blonde strands back into a bun, I left the bathroom, intending to go find breakfast and space from Salem while I tried to work through everything I was feeling.

“Tor…” Salem growled from the bed in a way that had shivers rolling down my spine and my cock taking notice. Fuck, I needed to get a grip.

“I need breakfast,” I told him without looking in his direction as I walked over to my dresser to find a pair of sweats so I wasn’t walking around in just a pair of boxers and a t-shirt. I wasn’t shamed to do so—we’d all grown up together and had seen everything we all had to offer—but I did try to be respectful.

“We need to talk.”

I scoffed, my shoulders stiffening. Now he wanted to talk? What about when I wanted to talk? He hadn’t given a fuck then. In fact, I still remembered his words, still felt the way they sliced into every single one of my organs.

It was a fucking mistake, Tor. Don’t fucking bring it up again.

“Go fuck yourself,” I muttered, slamming my dresser drawer shut without finding a pair of sweats. I had to get the fuck out of this room. Away from Salem.

I didn’t hear him get up as I made my way to the door. My hand was on the door handle when his body slammed into mine, shoving me into my only way out. His hand gripped my hip, his other hand slamming into the door above my head. My breath left me with a whoosh of air, my cheek smooshed against the door.

“Get off of me,” I growled, my heart jackhammering against my breastbone.

“Nah, baby,” Salem growled in my ear. I hated the shiver that rolled down my spine. “Unlike you, I don’t give up when someone throws a few hateful words my fuckin’ way.
